Boudoir Hair and Makeup

Here are some tips for creating a romantic, sexy boudoir look! These tips are featured on Photographer Susie Linquist's Boudoir Blog!

HAIR

The day/night before your shoot:

• Wash and condition your hair. Towel dry. 
• Spray a volumizer at the roots. With a wide-tooth comb, comb the product through the ends of your hair. [Try: Matrix Amplify Root Lifter, Rusk Thick] 
• Divide your hair in sections, and blow-dry with a round brush, always lifting at the roots. If you have trouble using a round brush, use a paddle brush. [Try: Paul Mitchell 413 Sculpting Brush]

The day of your shoot:

• For more volume at the roots, lightly mist with dry shampoo. Leave in for a minute, and then work it in with fingertips or brush. [Try: Batiste Original Dry Shampoo, TreSemme Fresh Start Volumizing Dry Shampoo] 
• Take random sections of hair and wrap around a curling iron. Small sections for tighter curls; larger sections for bigger waves. OR Set your hair in rollers. Always roll them away from your face. 
• Lightly spray pieces with hairspray. [Try: Matrix Vavoom Freezing Spray, Sebastian Shaper or Shaper Plus] 
• Gently loosen and tousle your hair, so waves stay intact. If your ends look dry, use a small amount of serum on your hands when tousling. Only apply serum to ends of hair, never to the roots. [Try: Garnier Fructis Style Brilliantine Shine, Biosilk Silk Therapy] 
• Lightly hairspray again all over to hold the waves.

If you have super short hair, skip the curling iron and use a pomade to create a sexy, “bed head” look. [Try: TIGI Bed Head stick] Bed Head is also great for controlling flyaways.

MAKEUP

At least 3 days before your shoot:

Make sure your eyebrows are tweezed or waxed so they are ready to go. Treat any face and body acne with topical medicine (that works for your skin type). Even if you don’t have visible acne, continue treating areas that you know are acne-prone to prevent a breakout.

PS:  Don’t forget about your finger and toe nails!  Treat yourself to a mani/pedi or trim and paint them yourself!

The day of your shoot:

EYES:

I like to create a sexy, sultry eye for boudoir shoots! Here’s how:

• On the brow bone (under your eyebrow) and inside corners, apply a shimmery ivory shadow to highlight these areas. [Try: Ulta Eye Shadow in Naked, Pearl or Silk] 
• Over the entire lid, sweep a shimmery neutral shade. [Try: Ulta Eye Shadow in Truffle, Organza or Tiara] 
• In the crease and outer corners, I love to use a dark, purple-y taupe! [Try: Ulta Eye Shadow in Mesmerize, or MAC Eye Shadow in Patina or Twinks] Use this on the lower lashline too! 
• Line the outer half of the upper lashine with black pencil eyeliner. To smooth and set the liner, use a slanted eyeliner/shadow brush with dark brown or black eye shadow over the liner. 
• Curl eyelashes. Apply 2 coats of black mascara to top and bottom lashes.

FACE:

To create a fresh complexion, we are going to skip powder in our makeup application. Here’s what to do:

• If your face feels dry, apply a light moisturizer. [Try: CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion, Oil of Olay Moisturizing Lotion for Sensitive Skin] 
• If you tend to have oily skin, use an oil-control primer. [Try: Philosophy Never Let Them See You Shine, Philosophy The Present Clear Makeup*, or Smashbox Photo Finish Light] *The Present is great if you have large pores, scarring, wrinkles or uneven skin tone. 
• Using your fingers or concealer brush, cover any blemishes and under eye darkness with concealer. Blend well. [Try: Sonia Kashuk Concealer Palette, Essence Cover Stick] 
• Using your fingers, makeup sponge, or foundation brush, lightly apply foundation only where necessary to create a smooth, flawless face. Blend well. [Try: Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse] OR If you have oily skin, try an oil-control foundation or makeup. [Try: MAC Studio Tech, MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation] 
• If you want to use bronzer, apply from your ear down the hollows of cheeks (to contour). Apply across forehead, temples and lightly across cheeks and chin to add color. You can also apply it with a large fluffy brush to collarbone and décolletage! [Try: Rimmel Natural Bronzer] 
• Use a cream blush on the apples of your cheeks and blend upward and outward to hairline. OR apply a light dusting of powder blush. Use a natural, rosy peach shade. [Try: MAC Powder Blush in Mocha]

BROWS + LASHES:

• Using a pencil liner, fill in eyebrows using short, feathery strokes. 
• Apply false lashes. I like to use the ones labeled “wispies”! They look full and flirty! If you have a hard time applying lashes, cut them in half and apply just to the outer half of your lashline. [Try: Ardell Wispies in Black]

LIPS:

• For long-wearing natural lip color, line and fill them with a lipliner. I like to use a nude, peachy pink for boudoir shoots. [Try: e.l.f. Feather Proof Moisturizing Lip Liner in Spice] 
• Apply a clear or tinted gloss all over. [Try: Ulta Super Shiny Lip Gloss in Whisper, Smith’s Rosebud Salve]

Product Review: Philosophy

Philosophy has great quality products, but there are a couple I wouldn’t buy again.  One thing is always true, their customer service representatives are always super kind and helpful anytime I place an order!  They usually have a gift with purchase, which is always nice!

The Color of Grace Amazing Grace Coloring Book	This angelic, light pink palette has lipglosses, cheek colors, eyeshadows and an illuminator. All good! Especially the lipglosses, mine are almost gone! They look pretty in the package, and even better than you expect on the lips!	****
Hope in a Jar original formula moisturizer for all skin types	I had higher expectations, based on all its great reviews. Feels good going on, provides instant moisture, but I didn’t notice a difference in fine lines. I think it smells good, but some clients do not like the smell.	**
Hope in a Tube high density eye and lip firming cream	I don’t notice a difference in the fine lines around my eyes. I only use it at night, as it makes my skin extremely shiny where applied. I couldn’t imagine putting makeup over it, as the tube says you can.	*
Hope Springs Eternal deep sea ultra-fine hydrating mist	Spray is convenient, refreshing, feels great in the summertime! (Try putting in the fridge!) Smells like lime! Very light, I recommend a lotion if you want more moisture.	***
The Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash micro-massage exfoliating wash	I was never one to exfoliate, but now I am, this stuff is the best! Feels amazing when washing your face, and skin feels so good and clean afterwards! I use it every other day, but it can be used daily. Smells clean! Clients love it too! Use with a sea sponge for super exfoliation!	*****
Never Let Them See You Shine oil and shine control velvet touch primer	This anti-shine primer is OK, it doesn’t really prevent shine. Feels oily when I put it on, takes a couple minutes to dry. You can really smell the lavender oil. Don’t notice much difference in oil control on clients either.	**
The Present clear makeup	This intrigued me, “clear makeup”!? Basically it’s good for people with uneven skin surface (scars, large pores, etc.). As it dries you can feel skin tighten a little. Good primer! Makeup adheres well. Can use by itself.	***
Purity Made Simple high-foaming daily cleanser	I like this better than regular “Purity”. I have oily skin, so this foamy cleanser feels great. I alternate this with “Microdelivery” every other day. Only need about 2-3 pumps per wash! Smells great!	***
Purity Made Simple one-step facial cleanser	This might be better for people with dry skin, too creamy for me. I felt like I had to keep rinsing my face after washing. Smells great!	**
The Supernatural poreless, flawless spf 15 tinted primer	My sister, who has sensitive skin and hardly wears makeup, loves this! A little dark for her (she has super light skin), so we were going to try “Hope in a Tinted Moisturizer” (because they have a wide range of colors), but she didn’t like “Hope in a Jar”. Since they are basically the same product, but one is tinted, we didn’t try it. We just mix “Supernatural” with her regular moisturizer to lighten it up.	****
The Supernatural Coloring Book	This earth-toned, natural palette has everything the “Grace” palette has, but a cream blush instead of illuminator. The “Reflect a Little” (a shimmery nude peach) lipgloss is my favorite! Looks awesome on everyone!	****
Think Big Mascara	Decent volumizing mascara, gets a little clumpy. I don’t like the mascara wand. There are a lot of bristles and they’re so close together, I don’t feel like they grab my lashes hardly at all. When I use it with a disposable mascara wand, I like it much better.	***

I’ve also tried a variety of their body washes, and I like those!  Philosophy’s scents are great!  Light and pretty!  I also like their hand wash.  Rating for body and hand washes:  ***

Best of Makeup Brush Cleaners: Part I

Face Secrets Make-Up Brush Cleansing Towelettes	♥ ♥ ♥	Very convenient, towelette has perfect texture. Great for quick brush cleaning, but I wish they didn’t dry out so fast!
Face Secrets Professional Makeup Brush Cleaner	♥	I didn’t like how the bristles felt after I used this cleaner. Smell is OK. Wouldn’t buy this one again.
Ulta Professional Brush Cleaner	♥ ♥ ♥	Cleans well, smells nice, and leaves bristles feeling good. The directions say simply spray on and let dry, but I can’t help but wipe the brush on a paper towel!

Applying a Bald Cap

This works best on people with very short hair and short or no sideburns. Make sure their shirt is loose around the neck, as it may get makeup on it. Do not use on people allergic to latex.

Where to find bald caps, spirit gum, spirit gum remover and liquid latex:

Materials:

• Rubbing alcohol
• Hair gel and/or hair spray
• Bald cap
• Spirit gum
• Spirit gum remover
• Liquid latex
• Translucent powder
• Concealer (range of colors)
• Foundation (range of colors)
• Facial powder (range of colors)

Applicators:

• Cotton balls/pads/swabs
• Makeup sponges
• Brush (small-medium)
• Powder puff

Tools:

• Spray bottle w/ water
• Comb
• Hair dryer
• Marker
• Scissors
• Washcloth

Steps:

1. Flatten the hair. Apply hair gel/spray and comb back. OR spray lightly with water, apply gel/spray and dry with hair dryer. OR use a wig cap. If they have long hair, tie into a low ponytail so it hangs out the back of the cap and down into their costume.
2. With a cotton ball/pad, apply rubbing alcohol around the hairline. This removes oil to ensure good adhesion of the cap to the skin.
3. If the cap has any creases, blow with the hair dryer to soften the crease.
4. Have them hold their 2 index fingers at the sides of their forehead. Place the front of the cap over their fingers; as they pull it down over the forehead, pull the back over the neck. Make sure it is tight, centered on the head, and covering the ears.
5. With marker, draw a 1-inch dot above the center of the ear. Draw a line from the dot to the earlobe.
6. Gently pull the cap down and away from the head (without moving the entire cap). Carefully cut up the line and in a circle around the dot.
7. Pull the ear out from the slit and pull the cap down tightly around the ear. If the cap bunches around the ear, pull the cap back over the ear and cut the circle a little bigger. When it is good, the cap will be close to the ear with no bunching and no hair showing.
8. If necessary, trim the front, back and “sideburns” of the cap, leaving enough room (between the hairline and edge of cap, at least ½- 1 inch) to pull it down and apply spirit gum to the skin.
9. Fold up the front edge of cap about ½ inch. Apply spirit gum to the inside of the cap and across the forehead. Do not get spirit gum in the eyes or hair. Wait until the spirit gum is tacky (tap it with your index finger to make it tackier). Fold the cap down and press onto the skin with damp washcloth. Let dry.
10. Have the person look up slightly. Gently pull the cap backwards. Apply spirit gum to the inside back edge of cap and to skin (avoiding hair). Press cap to skin with damp washcloth. Let dry.
11. Seal the remaining areas of the cap:  neck to ears, and then ears to eyebrows. Seal any gaps or loose edges. Let dry.
12. With a makeup sponge, apply a thin, smooth layer of liquid latex around the edge of the cap, about 1 inch wide. Do not get in eyes or hair. Let dry. If necessary, apply another layer and let dry. Use the hair dryer set on low to shorten drying time.
13. Use a powder puff with translucent powder to set the latex. Press it in and gently wipe away excess with the puff.
14. Cover the cap with makeup. If matching it to the skin, use a shade closest to the forehead skin tone. If the cap is transparent, use a thick, opaque concealer to cover the cap; otherwise the hair underneath may show. Apply in a stippling motion over the cap and skin. Apply other colors on top as necessary. Set the makeup by pressing matching or translucent powder with a powder puff. 

Removing the Cap

1. If it is comfortable for the person, simply pull the cap gently away from the skin. If not, apply spirit gum remover with a brush (or cotton swab) to the edge of the cap. Do not use your best brush, as the remover may wear away the adhesive that holds the bristles.  Loosen the cap from the skin with the brush. Do not get remover in the eyes. Be especially careful on areas where hair may be stuck underneath.
2. Peel off any remaining liquid latex. If it is in hair, apply mineral/baby oil and comb out. An eyebrow/lash comb works great for this. 
3. If it is still sticky, rub a cotton ball/pad with spirit gum remover over the skin.

Parabens and Sulfates: Are They Bad?

It is not proven that either is bad, but there are studies showing the negatives of parabens and sulfates.

PARABENS

Parabens (most commonly methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben) are preservatives that fight bacteria and fungus. Some parabens are found naturally in plants (e.g., methylparaben in blueberries). They are in 90% of skincare, hair care, and cosmetic products. Some drugs, toothpaste and food have parabens too.

Small amounts were found in breast cancer tumors. Parabens can act like estrogen, which in high levels and long-term exposure, can lead to breast cancer. Most breast tumors are found near the underarm; however, most antiperspirants/deodorants don’t have parabens. Parabens may lower reproductive health, build up in the body, and increase DNA damage from UVB rays.

SULFATES 

Sulfates (most commonly sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate) form a rich lather when added to water. They are in the majority of personal hygiene products (e.g., shampoo, toothpaste, shaving cream, hand soap, etc.). 

Sulfates dehydrate sebaceous glands, depriving the hair and scalp of natural oils. They can also damage or clog exposed hair follicles, leading to hair loss. Sulfates can fade color-treated hair.

 

PRODUCTS TO TRY

If you are worried about the effects of parabens and sulfates, many companies now offer paraben and sulfate-free products, so search your favorite brands! Here are some more brands (containing little to no parabens or sulfates) to try:

Wearing Makeup If You Wear Eyeglasses

Let’s “focus” on the eyes! Eyeglasses naturally draw attention to your eyes. So the goal is clean, defined eyes, as glasses can magnify and/or blur your eye area.

With no makeup on, put on your glasses. Do they make your eyes look bigger or smaller than they actually are?

• If your glasses make your eyes look a little bit smaller, let’s make them look bigger!

1. Use a highlight shade (such as a light white, cream or pink) on the inside corners of the eye and under the brows.
2. Apply a mid-tone shade (like a medium brown) to the outside corners and a little bit up into the crease.
3. Apply mascara with a “lengthening” motion: one forward motion from the root to the ends. Just 1 coat will define the eyes.

• If they make your eyes look bigger, let's play them down a bit!

1. Use a muted highlight shade (maybe soft peach or nude) under the brows.
2. Sweep a smoky gray or brown eyeshadow over the entire lid and a little up into the crease.
3. Apply 1 or 2 coats of mascara with a “thickening” motion: zig-zag motion from root to the ends.

In any "case":

• Apply eye cream or moisturizer to soften any fine lines.
• Use a magnifying mirror when putting on your makeup so you can see!
• Shape and maintain your eyebrows!
• Curl your lashes so they don’t touch the lenses. (Curled lashes are always good!)
• Use black or brown eyeliner for definition.
• Try water-resistant and long- wearing eye makeup so it doesn’t smudge!

For your face and lips: Try soft shades for bold frames, brighter shades for delicate frames. Neutrals always work!

Creating Classic Smoky Eyes

You’ll need 4 eyeshadow shades:

• platinum (white silver)
• silver (gray silver)
• charcoal (dark gray)
• black

Steps:

1. Swipe the platinum shade under the brow and to inner corners to brighten.
2. Brush the charcoal shade on your lid, crease, and lower lashline (not quite to the inner corners).
3. Dab the silver shade to the center of the lid to make your eyes appear larger.
4. Apply the black shade to the upper lashline just at the outer corners and into the crease.
5. With a small or medium eyeshadow brush, blend the shadows outward and upward.
6. Thinly run black liner across upper lashline. For a more dramatic look, line your inner (bottom) lashline and inside corners.
7. Apply two coats of black mascara to top and bottom lashes.

For a soft and natural look, finish with a peachy rose color on lips and cheeks. For a more intense look, finish with pale pinks to make the eyes really stand out!

Best of Self-Tanners: Part I

I have pale skin, burn easily, but I love to be tan! I used to visit the tanning bed everyday. I hit rock-bottom when I went twice in one day! Now a little older and a little wiser, I’ve switched to self-tanners.

Finding a good self-tanner is a trial-and-error effort. So to help you find one that works for you, here’s what I thought about these self-tanners. I’m using a scale of 5 hearts as the best rating!

	Toma’s Tan Perfect: A Total Sunless Tan Self-Tanning Lotion (at Sally Beauty Supply)	X		♥♥	It gives an instant deep, dark, brown tan, but it washes off too easily.
	True Blue Spa: Bronze Bombshell “Strike Gold” (at Bath & Body Works)		X	♥	Provides an instant bronze, but too oily and sticky!
	Ulta Tinted Self-Tanning Gel		X	♥	I usually like Ulta brand products, but I wouldn’t buy this one again.

As you can see, I don’t have any 5-heart self-tanners yet, so write me and tell me which self-tanner you think is the best! In the mean time, I’m still on the hunt!
